MU recently adopted a new restriction in the campus smoking policy. Those who wish to smoke must move 20 feet away from any building’s entrance, exit, window or fresh air intake system, such as an air conditioning unit. This is a small step in the plan for the MU campus to be completely smoke free by 2014.
Many students are not taking the new restriction seriously since there is little enforcement and no consequences set up. However, MU is not the only place struggling to enforce smoking regulations. The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the statewide Illinois smoking ban in public places is often ignored and those who continue to smoke go unpunished. A bill currently awaits the signature of the governor about setting fines and allowing health department officials and police to write tickets for smoking in public places.
