MU student Jony Rommel got so involved in the election over the past four months that she took the semester off from school to work for Barack Obama’s campaign, and she’s going to change her major from journalism to political science. Read more of her story at ColumbiaMissourian.com.
Her story may not be that unique — apparently, young voters really stepped up their volunteering efforts and voting power for this election. Tufts University’s Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement estimates that about 23 million Americans under age 30 voted Nov. 4, about 3.4 million more than in 2004. In other words, young-voter turnout was about 52 percent, up 4 to 5 percentage points from 2004 and 11 percentage points from 2000.
