The Big 12 football conference is experiencing turn around with the help of Missouri’s unexpected success, according to an Associated Press article that ran in the Missourian today.
The rather young conference, only 12 years old, is now counted among such prestigious fellows as the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-Ten.
The Big 12 has always contained powerhouse teams such as Oklahoma and Texas, but never has the conference as a whole been so successful. This year 8 teams went to bowl games, and five teams won their games which matches a conference record.
This upcoming football season also looks promising as 60% of all starters and ten starting quarter backs are returning to their respective teams. Including MU’s Chase Daniel who is considered by many to be a front runner for the 2008 Heisman Award after being nominated for it last year.
The change from mild mannered Midwestern conference to super charged football force happened fairly quickly. In the course of one season, MU and kU pulled out stellar seasons and won the Cotton and Orange Bowls, respectively. Along with Oklahoma and Texas’ powerful seasons.
On behalf of MU: Big 12, you’re welcome.
