i have to say i dont blame facebook for wanting to charge after all a business exists to turn a profit and not to provide a free service. I think it would be healthy for facebook to charge a fee shedding hords of users. i think people are becoming too dependent on social networking as their only form of human interaction. suddengly out of nowhere facebook has evolved into a birth right. but if that were to happen a younger fresher startup social network would take its place and then soon learn shortly after that you can't run such a overhead by selling small 1/4 page ad banners on the right hand side of the page. if people really wanted to keep their facebook they would purchase products from time to time that are advertised in those ads as support and a token of appreciation to facebook. in turn facebook would be allowed to charge more for that ad space and the people would have plenty of t-shirts with dumb sayings on them. the ads within facebook are so discrete and almost invisible. if they were smart they would be doing opo ups or banner ads that run across the top of the window. we all need to make money, business aren't any different.

It's the old business application the banks used in western history. Give free accounts, store your money and charge you fees. Best options for a free client~ keep your freedom in place and move.
Check for security agreements and how much of your information you actually own.
Per e.g. facebook has absolute rights to your photos, and other information you have supplied.
Mark Zuckerberg, is not a generous person. There is a reason why he created this site, also try to see who gave him seed money or startup funds for this huge international project.
Try to see outside the bigger box.
Nothing is free from someone that went to Harvard!
He mastered the ability to make money at any cost.

It was a small comment. Facebook is now worth over 1.6 BILLION DOLLARS. I doubt they would charge. But I would pay anyway because there are are a lot of social networks, but not all of my friends and family will use the same one. So it would be inconvenient to have to log into 20 different websites to communicate with people.

Here's one solution.. offer a "free account" and a "premium account".. the free one is just like it is today, while the premium $4/mo would add lots of great new features and control. If the $4 was a choice, heck, I might even pay it.

Classmates.com used to be free and Reunion.com used to be free. Netzero used to be free, too. So, it makes sense that, after garnering a large body of fans that Facebook would start charging. How much they charge and how much control a person has in his or her page would determine if I would stay. I like it, but I can certainly live without it.
